I never liked crappy new age relaxation music. The stuff with 'ambient' music and whalesong or rainforest noises. I always found that the music interfered with the sound of rainfall, or endangered tree frogs, or whatever. And it was crap music, too. So I'd be trying to relax and just get frustrated because the 'Sounds of the Amazon' involved a tacky synthesised vibraphone reminiscent of Play-School.
But I like very much the ambience of Heavy Clouds Building by Fortran 5. The synthesiser is kind of sparse and unobtrusive. Repetitive but mellow. And there are sparrows in there. That's a backdrop for cricket commentary. Normally I can't stand cricket... but that's because it is so mind numbingly boring. I've argued in the past that if it can be compared to sleep - it can't be a sport. The twist is that cricket can be fine if you take it as a calm background noise. It's just... totally unprovoking.
I had something like two hours sleep last night. And that sucks. Still, I'm down to the last few days at work, so I'm not having to deal with as many people. Internal calls I can just tell them I'm in the 'useless' period now, and handball them. I just have to get everything I know into other people's heads. That's the hard thing now. Last night was mostly stress about 'Dear God! I only have three days to show someone how to do X!!' alternating with 'You total fucking idiot, Lynne - normal people don't worry like this!'.
Neither of those thought patterns help with sleep.
